Affenpinscher
The Affenpinscher is a Toy breed of dog appearing with a coarse, wiry coat in various colors, ranging from black, to gray, red, silver, black with tan, or red and black with white. Characteristic of the breed is a monkey-like expression, which is well-framed framed by a mane formed by long, shaggy hair growing around the Affenpinscher's neck and head. Although this breed has a rather terrier-like appearance, they are actually more closely related to the pinscher or schnauzer than any of the terriers. Affenpinschers are both affectionate and playful. Possessive of their owners, as well as, their toys or food, these dogs will best suit life in homes excluding small children or other types of pets. Affenpinschers are known as somewhat stubborn animals, and thus, do not take very quickly to training. Originating in Germany during the 17th Century as a ratter, roots of this breed's name translate from the German word for monkey. Growing to reach 10-14" in height at 7-9lbs. once fully mature, the average Affenpinscher lives to reach 10-12 years of age.
