Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound is a tall, slender breed of dog with a rather unique appearance, attributed mostly to a long, silky, high-maintenance coat appearing in the shade of sand. Typical of this majestic breed is a long, graceful neck, leading to a silky topknot, and opposite prominently accentuated hipbones and a tail adorned with a curl at its tip. Flat-lying ears, a slightly convex muzzle, small, almond-shaped eyes, and black nose provide this breed’s narrow skull with a dignified appearance. Though also known for their tendency to be somewhat timid or aloof, Afghan Hounds make sweet and loyal companions in appropriately-matched homes. They have an independent and headstrong nature that can be difficult to train if not handled correctly, and will most easily acclimate to environments that do not contain small children or other animals. Said to have originated thousands of years ago in the cold mountain regions of Afghanistan, the Afghan Hound was first bred and used to hunt fox, wolves, and gazelle. Also sometimes called the, "King of Dogs," the Afghan Hound remained virtually exclusive to it’s homeland until the 1900’s, finally gaining recognition with the AKC in 1948. Growing 24-29" in height at 50-65lbs. once fully mature, the Afghan Hound has an average lifespan of 12-15 years of age.
