American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is a stocky, robust breed of dog with a short, coarse coat appearing in shades of white, brindle, brown, red, or tan. The American Bulldog's massive, square head features a strong jaw, box-shaped muzzle, black nose, loose lips, and prominent furrow between a set of rounded eyes. A wide chest and well-developed neck offset a, low-set tail, tapering from a thick base to a point at its tip. A larger, short-muzzled Classic, Bully, or Johnson, and Standard, Performance, or Scott type are the two varieties the American Bulldog can be seen in; though many represent a combination of both types. Despite the breed's reputation, American Bulldogs are generally happy, family-appropriate dogs, forming a quick bond with their owners and demonstrating a particular fondness for children. Sometimes stubborn, American Bulldogs can be a challenge to initially train. A naturally strong prey drive and protective instinct can lead the American Bulldog to express aggression towards other dogs or animals and a stand-offish attitude towards strangers. Proper socialization and complete training, however, successfully hones this breed's determined- not hostile- temperament. American Bulldogs are notoriously known for a tendency to slobber. As they require a moderate amount of exercise, homes with a yard best suit them. Ancestors of the American Bulldog originated in England during the 17th and 18th centuries to guard, drive livestock, and hunt bear, wild boar, squirrel and raccoon. Growing to reach 20-28" in height and between 60-120lbs., the average lifespan for the American Bulldog approximately 16 years of age.
