Appenzeller
The Appenzeller is a hardy, medium-sized dog breed seen with a shiny, dense double coat in black or brown accented by symmetrical markings in white and rust found across the breed's face. Small, dark eyes, a black nose, pendant-shaped ears, and narrow muzzle adorn the Appenzeller's wide, flat skull. The breed can also typically be seen with a tail, which curls up and over to be carried flat against the back. Appenzellers are a versatile, working breed with a friendly temperament. Homes with at least a large yard will better satisfy this breed's need to run and expel their energy. Appenzellers are a very vocal breed, with a tendency to be distrustful, as well as, watchful of unfamiliar guests or intruders, making keen watch dogs. Originating as a livestock guardian, draft dog, and all-purpose farm dog in Switzerland, this breed maintains a seemingly tireless work ethic. The rarest of the four Swiss Sennenhunds, this breed is known as the Appenzeller Sennenhund, Appenzell Mountain Dog, or Appenzell Cattle Dog. Generally growing 18-22" in height at 50-70lbs. once fully mature, Appenzellers live to reach between 12-13 years of age.
