The Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized, energetic breed of dog belonging to the herding group. Members of this breed can be found in a straight-to-wavy weather-resistant coat, appearing in an assortment of colors that range from a blue or liver merle to a solid black or liver with accents of tan. Oval-shaped eyes seen in any color-combination of brown, blue, or amber, along with a naturally docked tail and pair of highly-set, triangle-shaped ears are also characteristic of the breed. Australian Shepherds are popularly noted for their especially attentive and intuitive nature. Their playful and affectionate demeanor is particularly good around children, providing both a brave and loyal companion for the family on or off the farm or ranch. These dogs are easily-trained and agile at the same time- a busy breed that enjoys participating in sports, agility competitions, and any other type of activity or job that is provided for them to be able to take on. This drive to remain occupied best suits them for life in homes that will allot for this increased level of activity. Contrary to this breed's name, the Australian Shepherd is said to have developed during the 1800's in the western region of the U.S. Growing 18-23" in height at 40-65lbs. once fully mature, the average Australian Shepherd lives to reach between 12-15 years of age.
