Basenji
The Basenji is a small, square bodied dog breed appearing with a short, smooth coat in color combinations of tan, red, and black. These hounds have a rather graceful appearance, and are characteristically seen with a pair of erect ears, almond-shaped eyes, and a tightly curled tail. Two interesting attributes characteristic of the Basenji include a knack for climbing and a very unique bark, or baroo, often described as a yodel. Despite their small stature, Basenjis are considerably athletic, and do best in living environments tailored to accommodate a need for a sizable area enclosed to allow for them to run in. A clean breed, Basenjis have been known to groom themselves in a similar fashion to that of a cat. Independent and highly intelligent, Basenjis can be to be somewhat aloof when in the company of strangers. Originating in central Africa, the Basenji, once used as a sight hound for hunting, is considered one of the oldest dog breeds in existence to-date. The Basenji's name can be translated to read, “Jumping Up and Down Dog" or, “Wild Dog." Living to reach an average lifespan of 10-12 years of age, the Basenji stands 15-17" in height at 21-25lb. once fully mature.
