The Basset hound is a short-legged scent hound with a smooth, short coat appearing inn a variety of shades, including tri-color combinations of black, tan, white, red, lemon, grey, and blue. Their body is generally twice as long as it is high, while the head round and dome-shaped. The tip of the Basset hound's tail is characteristically white. Well-known their calm, pleasant, and outgoing dispositions, Basset Hounds make excellent pets in homes also containing children and other pets. Though both loyal and personable, the Basset Hound is a somewhat difficult breed to train. They prefer not to be left alone for long, and usually do best in homes with at least a small yard. When begging or attempting to get their owner's attention, Basset Hounds are known to use a low, murmur-like whine some Basset fans fondly call, "talking." With a sense of smell surpassed only by the Bloodhound, Basset Hounds hunt in packs or alone. Originating in France as a descendant of the Bloodhound for hunting fox, hare, opossum, and pheasant, the Basset Hound was named after a French word meaning, "low," originally bred for their dwarfism. The breed first gained recognition with the AKC in 1885. Growing to reach 11-15" in height with a weight of 45-60lbs., the average Basset Hound will live to reach 10-12 years of age.
