The Beagle has a short, compact body with a low-maintenance coat, appearing in tri-colors ranging from black and tan, to red and white, orange and white, or lemon and white. Irresistible hazel or brown eyes give the Beagle his characteristic, "pleading" expression. The Beagle's playful, puppy-like appearance is emphasized by his black, button-nose, rounded feet, and gaily-carried tail. Originally bred and used in packs by English horsemen to hunt hare and pheasant centuries ago, the Beagle has an acute sense of smell and trademark, loud baying cry. Outgoing and curious by nature, Beagles often demonstrate a very independent and determined personality, and are best if seldom left alone for long periods of time. Calm and loving, with an all-around sweet disposition, the Beagle is a great family pet in households with children or other canines. One of America's more popular scent hounds of choice, the Beagle's popularity has been steadily on the rise since its recognition by the AKC in 1884. The Beagles' non intimidating and loyal demeanor has landed the breed jobs as an agricultural border-patrol hound world-wide. The average lifespan of the Beagle ranges from 12-15 years of age; standing anywhere from 13-16" in height and weighing in at 20-25 pounds once fully mature.
