The South African Boerboel is a well-balanced, robust breed of dog belonging to the Mastiff family. Their smooth, slick coat can be seen shades of brindle, yellow, brown, or reddish-brown. Accenting the South African Boerboel’s massive skull is a short muzzle and widely-set ears, adding to the breed’s impressively powerful, strapping build. Both dutiful and intelligent, South African Boerboels prove a confident and steady guard dog in most any domestic living environment. Despite their somewhat intimidating appearance, the South African Boerboel’s naturally honed, strong guarding instinct is undeniably put to best use and most compatible for family homes with a large yard. With a name literally translating into, "farmer's dog," the South African Boerboel was once used to guard and protect South African homesteads. Ancestors of the South African Boerboel are thought to have been a cross between indigenous dogs and those who accompanied European settlers migrating to the area during the mid 17th century. Growing to reach 23-28” in height at the withers and weighing in between 160-200lbs. once fully mature, the average South African Boerboel lives to reach 12 or more years of age.
