Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a tiny, yet tenacious breed appearing in both long-coat and smooth-coat varieties. Each coat type can be seen in a variety of colors, ranging from fawn, sand, chestnut, silver, black, or steel blue to parti-color. Large, erect ears and bug-like eyes give the Chihuahua and his distinct, apple-shaped skull a unique look of all its own. The convex tail is usually curled over the back or to the side. The smallest breed in the world, a fully mature Chihuahua generally grows anywhere from 6-9” in height and between 2-6 lbs. in weight; usually living approximately 15 years of age. Due to this small size, Chihuahuas are especially sensitive to cold temperature. Moderate climates usually suit them best. Bold and courageous, the Chihuahua forms a strong bond with their owner, often demonstrating possessive or jealous behavior. This tendency makes the Chihuahua best suited for single-pet households that do not contain children. Chihuahuas have been documented as the oldest breed known to be indigenous to the Western Hemisphere, though specific ancestral roots still remain uncertain. The Chihuahua’s name was derived from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where the breed first gained its popularity at the turn of the 20th century.
