The Maltese is a toy breed known best for its mantle of white, silky-smooth hair flowing from head to toe. The Maltese’ trademark coat requires frequent grooming, and for the most part, is hypoallergenic. Dark, halo-surrounded eyes and a small, black nose on a tapered snout provide the Maltese with an expressive look. A spry breed with a dauntless attitude, Maltese are lively, energetic, and intelligent, picking up on training relatively easily. Quite unaware of its’ petite stature, this breed has a reputation for demonstrating a fearless attitude. Apartment living well-suits this breeds’ small size, while a need for companionship makes them best if seldom left alone. Homes without small children are also recommended. Since originating on the island of Malta as early as 6000 B.C., ancestors of the Maltese have been known by various other names; the name Maltese coming into use only within the last century. Maltese generally grow to reach 8-10” in height and 3-10lbs. in weight once fully grown, with a lifespan typically ranging between 12-18 years of age.
