Akbash - The Akbash Dog is an elegant breed of dog seen with a coarse, weatherproof coat in a distinctively white hue. Characteristic of the breed is a long, feathered tail curving to meet the dog’s hocks. Akbash are also typically seen with long legs, almond-shaped eyes, and highly-set, v-shaped ears which slightly round at their tips to lie close to the dog’s skull. Akbash are independent thinkers, which can sometimes lead these dogs to be a bit of a challenge to train. Introducing them early-on to other animals living within the home is recommended. Well-known for their intelligence and loyal valor, this breed’s skills can be tailored to serve as either a companion or working breed. Homes with at least a large yard- ideally an outdoor space such as a field, pasture, or farm- will adequately satisfy this breed’s drive to work. The Akbash is accustomed to a relatively low-energy work load. Originating in and named after Turkey’s region of Akbash more than 3,000 years ago, this breed was predominantly bred and used by shepherds as a guardian for sheep and other herding livestock. This breed is also sometimes known as the Coban Kopegi or the Akbas. Growing to reach 28-34” in height at 90-140lbs. once fully mature, the average Akbash lives 10-11 years of age.
