Bichon Frise - Seen with a hypoallergenic, loosely curled double coat in white with shades of cream, gray, and apricot, the Bichon remains one of today’s more popular companion animals of choice. Black or brown eyes surrounded by a halo and black nose and lips give this marshmallow look-alike dog a gentle, yet inquisitive appearance. To match, the Bichon proves to be a very sensitive, polite, and affectionate breed. A bold and outgoing personality motivates this breed’s love for company- be it human companionship or otherwise- enjoying every opportunity to play center of attention. The Bichon Frise is self-assured and intelligent; both competitive and obedient. Though stubborn at times, Bichon Frise catch on to training relatively quickly, and are well-suited for life either with or without a yard. Ancestors of the Bichon originated in the Mediterranean area during the 14th century as a cross between the Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle. First gaining recognition by the AKC as a non-sporting breed in 1973, the breed’s name literally translates from French to mean curly lap dog. Weighing in between 7-12lbs. and growing to reach 9-12” in height, the average Bichon Frise can live more than 15 years of age.
