Burmese - Members of the Burmese cat breed are most easily recognized for their large, expressive, golden-yellow set of eyes and short, satin-like coat, most frequently appearing in shades of sable, champagne, blue, or platinum. Well-placed, round-tipped ears adorn this breed’s round skull with blunt muzzle. Burmese are comparatively medium-in-size, and yet, carry a surprisingly heavy muscle mass. While lively, playful, and even somewhat clumsy as kittens, these cats mature to become both charming and dedicated stewards of the house. Communicating with their owners using a soft, sweet voice, Burmese adapt to be able to coexist in homes with or without children and even other types of pets. Noted for their undeniably people-oriented nature, Burmese enjoy any opportunity to soak up an owner’s attention- from cuddling to participating in a simple game of fetch. An almost dog-like propensity and need for constant human companionship can sometimes find these cats trailing behind their owners throughout the day or night. The inherently trusting and of this breed best suits them for life as an indoor-only cat. Origins of the Burmese can be traced back to the early 1930’s, and can be attributed to the efforts of a Dr. Joseph Thompson of San Francisco, who selectively bred a feline originally acquired in Burma to members of the Siamese cat breed. Burmese will generally outlive their feline counterparts, with an average lifespan ranging between 16-18 years of age.
