Chinese Shar Pei - The Chinese Shar Pei is a non-sporting breed of dog seen in any color coat of the horse-coat, brush-coat, or bear-coat varieties. These dogs are most popularly recognized for their characteristically abundant, loose folds of skin accentuating their face, neck, and withers. A blue-black tongue, small ears, and a snout similar in appearance to that of a hippopotamus provide the Chinese Shar Pei with quite a unique look. Chinese Shar Peis are independent by nature, and tend to remain stand-offish or distrustful around strangers. The breed’s high level of intelligence makes them easily trained, while an inherent loyalty and devotion towards their family causes the breed to be well-befitted as a pet in most any home. Reserved when in the company of strangers, Chinese Shar Peis are notably strong watch or guard dogs. While the Chinese Shar Pei has been confirmed to be one of the oldest dog breeds in existence today, they didn’t gain recognition with the AKC until 1991. Originating in China’s Guangdong province as a fighting and guard dog, this breed’s name translates into English to read, “Sand skin”. Growing to reach 18-20” in height at the withers at 40-55lbs. in weight, the average Chinese Shar Pei lives to reach approximately 10 years of age.
