Collie - Appearing in sable, tri-colored, blue merle, and white color variations in both smooth and rough coat varieties, the Collie is a breed of dog characteristically seen with a collar-like ruff which grows to frame the breed’s head. Both Collie types posses a double coat with a soft inner. While the more popular, rough coated variety’s outer coat appears long, dense, and coarse, the smooth coated variety’s remains dense and short. Highly intelligent, receptive, and easily trained, Collies make ideal pets in most any living situation. They are noted for their sweet nature and high compatibility with children, demonstrating a noble and devout temperament. Homes with at least a medium-sized yard will satisfy this breed’s energetic and playful disposition, along with their need to run. As this breed is generally sensitive to warmer climates, the Collie will be most comfortable in cooler to temperate regions. The forefathers of today’s Collie originated in Scotland as hard-working, herding dogs. The breed has also been trained and used in water-rescue efforts, as well as, to guard flocks of sheep. Growing to reach 22-26” in height at 50-75lbs. once fully mature, the average Collie lives to reach 14-16 years of age.
