Dachshund - Best known for its low, elongated body and short legs, the Dachshund is a small, perky breed appearing in short-haired, long-haired, and wired-haired varieties. The Dachshund’s coat color can range according to type, appearing in solid tans or yellows, bi-colors of black, brown, gray, or chestnut, and even speckled-streaked, piebald, and harlequin varieties. The dachshund’s skull has a slightly convex shape, with a pair of protruding eyebrows and long, pointed snout. Long, hanging ears and pair of dark, oval-shaped eyes give the Dachshund a pleasant expression. Sometimes mischievous, Dachshunds can be somewhat difficult to train. They are small and therefore quite compatible living in an apartment. They are originated in Germany during the early 1800’s, Dachshunds were notoriously used to hunt badger, fox, and rabbit. The name, “Dachshund,” in fact, literally translates from German into, "badger dog." Usually living between 12-15 years of age, Dachshunds range from 12-18” in height and weight between 8-20lbs. in weight once fully mature.
