English Mastiff - A massive and powerful build provides the English Mastiff with an awe-inspiring presence of all its’ own. The English Mastiff’s short coat appears in shades of fawn, apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, or fawn-brindle. The breed’s small, hazel eyes, short, square muzzle, nose, and ears are characteristically covered with a black mask. English Mastiffs are a very gentle, calm breed. Their patient, devoted, and loyal nature makes the English Mastiff a fine pet in both a home with or without children. They have a remarkable ability to hold intruders at bay, making fine watch and guard dogs and seldom ever having the need to go so far as to touch an opponent. Said to have been named after an Anglo-Saxon word meaning powerful, the English Mastiff’s ancestors include the now- instinct Alaunt and Molosser dog breeds. Recognized as the oldest British dog breed, the English Mastiff’s existence can be traced back as far as the 6th Century B.C., bred and used in the sports of dog-fighting, as well as, bear, bull, and lion-baiting. Ranging in height from 27-32”, the English Mastiff is known as the heaviest dog breed in the world, reaching up to 200lbs. once fully mature. The breed has an average lifespan ranging between 9-12 years of age.
