Kelpie - The Kelpie is a medium-sized dog breed appearing in both working and show-type varieties and characteristically seen with a white accent across the breed’s chest. The working Kelpies’ coat grows in a smooth, short, or rough shag in various colors including black-top, cream, red, chocolate, black, fawn, black and tan, or red and tan; while the show Kelpies’ coat grows in a short, double coat appearing in just four, solid shades. The typical Kelpie is also seen with pricked ears and a matching tail. Kelpies are known for their agile, highly athletic nature; thus, homes with at least a medium-sized yard will suit this breed best. These dogs enjoy most any opportunity to expel their energy, and can become overly bored or destructive if not occupied with sufficient activities or tasks that will busy this breed’s schedule accordingly. This breed has an impressively prominent stamina with a loyal and friendly personality. Originating in the early 1800’s as an Australian Sheepdog, the Kelpie was achieved through a cross between the Collie and several other indigenous dog breeds such as the dingo. Kelpies were originally prized for their high level of intelligence, which equipped these dogs to independently guide or herd flocks of sheep. Growing to reach 17-20” in height at 25-45lbs. once fully mature, the average Kelpie will live to reach 10-14 years of age.
