Pembroke Welsh Corgi - The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a low-set breed of dog appearing in a variety of colors including red, sable, fawn, or black with tan. This relatively high-maintenance double coat sheds moderately year-round and is commonly seen with a narrow accent of white located on the breed’s head, and occasionally across parts of the legs, chest, neck, or muzzle. A naturally short tail is characteristic of the breed. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are surprisingly athletic, lively dogs, considering how low and plump a stature they actually have. Homes containing a small to medium sized yard will allow the Pembroke Welsh Corgi room to run and expel their energy. Pleasant and loving companions, these dogs have a special fondness for children, with whom they develop an especially close bond with. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a quick-thinking, high intelligence level, and is easily trained. A natural herding instinct has sometimes led this breed to be described as stubborn or hard to break of bad habits. Originating in Pembrokeshire, Wales, the ancestors of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi are thought to have been descendants of Swedish Vallhunds. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s name translates to read, “Dwarf Dog,” as their short height and nipping-at-the-heels technique made the breed ideal for herding livestock. The smallest of the herding dog breeds, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi generally grows to reach 10-12” in height at 25-30lbs. Their average lifespan ranges between 12-15 years of age.
