Wolf Dogs - The Wolfdog, also sometimes known as the Wolf Hybrid, offers the exotic animal or pet lover an option very closely resembling a wolf, but with the tendencies of a domestic pet. This breed is most frequently achieved as the result of a breeding between a Grey Wolf and one of several dog breeds such as the German Shepherd, Siberian Husky, or Alaskan Malamute. How closely the Wolfdog resembles a true Wolf is determined by which dog breed is selected to breed with the wolf, most of which have been in captivity for generations. As the Wolfdog is the result of a cross between a wolf and a domestic dog, this breed requires the ownership of an experienced, mature handler who will effectively maintain a working dominance hierarchy within the home environment. While the genetic make-ups of the wolf and the dog have been unique from each other for over one-hundred-thousand years, intentional interbreeding instigated by human interest dates back to just over 10,000 years ago, when these hybrids were used to aid in the hunting of mammoth. The domestication and breeding of the Wolfdog has proved a topic of much controversy over the years, resulting in laws pertaining to the ownership of the breed to vary from state to state.
