Yorkshire Terrier - The Yorkshire Terriers long, silky coat grows in a steal blue along the tail and body and a tan-hue on the remaining parts. Especially lengthy on the head, the Yorkie’s coat requires devout daily grooming, and is most often kept short, when outside the show ring. Yorkshire Terriers are popular pets for individuals susceptible to pet allergies, as their high-maintenance coat is virtually non-shedding. The Yorkie has a flat head with a dark nose and short muzzle. Perky, V-shaped ears accompany a set of dark, yet sparkling, eyes, while round feet with dark nails add to the Yorkie’s, “dainty” appearance. Adventurous and feisty, Yorkshire terriers are small dogs with much spunk. They require a significant amount of time spent with their owners, with whom they are loyal and affectionate. Weary of strangers and other animals, Yorkies make lively watchdogs, bravely defending their terrain by any means necessary. Easily trained, and well-suited for apartment life, Yorkies do best in homes without children. They generally prefer temperate to warm climates over chilly ones. Developing in the mid 1800’s in northern England, Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred and used to expunge rats occupying mine shafts; today’s standard appearing in the later half of the century. Yorkies usually grow to reach 6-7” in height, weighing between 5-7lbs, and live to reach 12-15 years of age.
